Privacy Policy

Effective date: February 28, 2026

BrightIQ ("we," "our," or "us") operates the BrightIQ Homeschool Start Wizard platform (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

We are committed to protecting the privacy of families and children who use our platform. We do not sell personal data to third parties, and we take reasonable technical and organizational measures to keep your information secure.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you sign in via Google OAuth (or another supported provider), we receive your name, email address, and a unique identifier from the authentication provider. We store this information to create and maintain your account.

1.2 Family Profile Data

To generate your personalized homeschool plan, we collect information you voluntarily provide through the intake wizard, including: your state of residence, your children's first names, approximate ages and grade levels, learning needs or special considerations, your homeschool goals and reasons, daily time availability, budget range, and preferred learning style. This data is stored in our database and used solely to power the AI plan generation and dashboard features.

1.3 AI-Generated Content & Chat History

When you use the "Ask BrightIQ" AI Advisor or generate a homeschool plan, your inputs are sent to our AI processing infrastructure (powered by large language model APIs). These inputs may include questions, follow-up prompts, and family context you provide. We retain generated plans and chat interactions in our database to provide continuity across sessions. We do not use your personal data to train AI models.

1.4 Daily Learning Log

If you use the Daily Learning Log feature, we store journal entries including dates, subjects covered, mood ratings, session duration, and optional notes. This data is private to your account and used to calculate streaks and provide recordkeeping summaries.

1.5 Community Tips

If you post a tip to the Community board, your display name (from your account) and the tip content are stored and displayed publicly. Likes and reports are associated with your account but are not displayed publicly.

1.6 Usage Data

We collect standard web analytics data including page views, session duration, and feature usage. This data is aggregated and anonymized where possible. We use this information to improve the platform.

1.7 Voice Input

If you use the voice input feature in the AI Advisor, audio is temporarily uploaded to our storage infrastructure, transcribed via the Whisper API, and then deleted. We do not retain audio recordings beyond the transcription process.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and maintain your account and family profile
  • Generate personalized homeschool plans using AI
  • Power the Ask BrightIQ AI Advisor with relevant family context
  • Track your daily learning log and streak progress
  • Enable the Community tips board
  • Generate shareable read-only plan links
  • Improve and debug the platform
  • Send service-related communications (if you opt in)

We do not use your personal data for advertising, sell it to third parties, or share it with data brokers.

3. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

BrightIQ uses artificial intelligence to generate homeschool plans, legal summaries, curriculum recommendations, and chat responses. AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, outdated information, or errors. All AI-generated content is provided for general informational and educational purposes only and should not be relied upon as legal, medical, or professional advice.

Your inputs (family profile, questions, preferences) are processed by third-party AI API providers. These providers have their own privacy policies governing how they handle API request data. We select providers that commit to not using API inputs to train their models.

Homeschool legal requirements vary by state and change over time. Always verify legal information with your state's Department of Education or a licensed attorney before making compliance decisions.

4. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored in a managed relational database hosted in the United States. We use encrypted connections (TLS/SSL) for all data in transit. Passwords are not stored โ€” authentication is handled entirely by OAuth providers (Google, etc.).

Uploaded audio files (voice input) are stored temporarily in cloud object storage and deleted after transcription. Shareable plan links use randomly generated tokens; only people with the exact link can access a shared plan.

While we implement reasonable security measures, no system is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately.

5. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

BrightIQ is designed for use by parents and guardians, not directly by children. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. The child information collected through the wizard (first names, ages, grade levels, learning needs) is provided by a parent or guardian and is used solely to personalize the homeschool plan for that family.

If you believe we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, please contact us at the address below and we will promptly delete it.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Export your data in a portable format
  • Object to certain processing activities

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Cookies & Tracking

We use session cookies to maintain your authenticated state. These cookies are essential for the Service to function and are not used for advertising tracking. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking technologies.

We may use first-party analytics to understand how the platform is used in aggregate. This data is anonymized and not linked to individual users.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you via the platform. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
